The “GITA”: A Closer Look at the Proposed Transitional Authority for Gaza

by admin477351

At the heart of the U.S. plan for post-war Gaza is a new and powerful entity: the “Gaza International Transitional Authority,” or “GITA.” This proposed body, which will be a central topic in the Trump-Netanyahu summit, is designed to be the administrative and security backbone of the territory for years to come.

According to reports, GITA would be a robust, UN-endorsed organization with a broad mandate. Its first responsibility would be to oversee security, filling the vacuum left by Hamas and preventing other militant groups from taking control. This would likely involve an international peacekeeping or monitoring force.

Its second major task would be to manage the colossal effort of reconstruction. With funding from Gulf nations, GITA would coordinate the rebuilding of homes, hospitals, schools, and critical infrastructure, effectively acting as the central planning agency for a new Gaza.

Finally, GITA would be responsible for restoring civil administration and basic services to the population. This would pave the way for its ultimate goal: preparing the Gaza Strip for a handover to a reformed and credible Palestinian Authority, once that body is deemed ready to govern.

While the concept of GITA is ambitious, it faces immense hurdles, chief among them the skepticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is wary of ceding control to any international body. President Trump will need to convince him that GITA is not a threat, but a necessary and reliable partner for ensuring that Hamas can never return to power.
