Mark Rydell, the esteemed director recognized for his Oscar-nominated work on “On Golden Pond,” has passed away at the age of 97. His death occurred due to natural causes at a retirement community for entertainment professionals in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles. Rydell’s most acclaimed directorial achievement came with the 1981 film “On Golden Pond,” which featured a stellar cast including Henry Fonda, Katharine Hepburn, and Jane Fonda. The movie earned 10 Academy Award nominations, with both Henry Fonda and Katharine Hepburn receiving Oscars for their performances. Rydell himself was nominated for Best Director, though the award ultimately went to Warren Beatty for “Reds.”

“On Golden Pond” was a significant success at the box office, grossing over $119 million worldwide. The film also marked Henry Fonda’s final screen appearance and secured him his only Oscar win. Throughout his storied career, Rydell had the opportunity to direct a number of Hollywood’s biggest stars, including the likes of Steve McQueen, John Wayne, Bette Midler, James Caan, Robert Redford, and Mel Gibson.
