Japan’s Defense Ministry is set to implement a new procurement system aimed at integrating cutting-edge technologies from startups into defense equipment, as announced by Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi. This initiative is part of a fast-track program that seeks to enhance the country’s defense capabilities by leveraging innovations in fields such as drones, artificial intelligence, and other emerging technologies relevant to modern warfare.
The program will initially focus on inviting proposals for low-cost, mass-producible small attack drones and associated equipment for the Ground Self-Defense Force and Maritime Self-Defense Force. The ministry emphasizes the prioritization of domestically produced components in these developments. The selection process will begin at the concept stage, with multiple promising companies chosen to proceed through prototype development and testing.
In addition to drone technology, the ministry is also interested in advancements that could improve warehouse management and reduce staffing needs, as well as equipment that aims to lessen aircraft noise and enhance working conditions for Air Self-Defense Force personnel.
Applications for the first round of proposals will open on October 2. By providing funding in advance for technology development, the ministry hopes to encourage greater participation from startups and accelerate the adoption of innovative technologies, ultimately strengthening Japan’s defense strategy.
