Anthropic Boosts AI Policy Budget to $40M, Addressing Safety Fears.

Anthropic has increased its financial commitment to Public First Action, a bipartisan group advocating for artificial intelligence transparency and safety, with a new $20 million donation. This brings the AI company’s total contribution to $40 million, highlighting its focus on public education and policy initiatives related to AI. Anthropic’s decision stems from concerns over the swift progression of AI systems, particularly its own Claude Mythos model, and the potential dangers if such technologies are misused. It is emphasized that the funds are strictly for educational purposes and not for political campaign support.

The announcement arrives amid growing discussions in the U.S. about regulating advanced AI technologies. Anthropic stresses the necessity for stronger protective measures as powerful AI systems could endanger critical infrastructure, such as hospitals and power grids, if mishandled. The company’s call for action aligns with the launch of the Claude Mythos Preview, an advanced AI model focused on cybersecurity, which is currently available to select users in government, technology, and financial sectors.

Dario Amodei, Anthropic’s CEO, has been vocal about the need for tighter oversight of sophisticated AI systems. He has advocated for mandatory independent testing and increased government power to block the release of AI models that fail safety standards. Additionally, he supports enhanced export controls on advanced AI chips and efforts to prevent foreign entities from duplicating leading U.S. technologies.

While Anthropic urges more stringent regulations, some industry competitors warn that such measures might stifle innovation and weaken the United States’ standing in the global AI arena, especially in competition with China. These discussions on AI governance are becoming increasingly relevant as the U.S. approaches its midterm elections, where AI is set to be a significant topic in policy and national security debates.
