Iran has proposed reopening the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz within a week if the United States agrees to a set of conditions, including lifting the naval blockade of Iranian ports, easing sanctions on oil exports, and maintaining a ceasefire that extends to Lebanon. The offer also includes resuming negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program.
The proposal, communicated to the United States via Qatar, sets a seven-day timeline starting from Washington’s acceptance. According to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, the plan would see initial measures implemented within four to five days, with the strait reopening on the sixth day and U.S.-Iran nuclear talks recommencing on the seventh.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical artery for global energy supplies, and its closure has been a significant concern for international oil and gas markets. Iran’s control over this waterway serves as a major leverage point in its ongoing conflict with the United States.
This diplomatic overture follows previous efforts to mediate between Tehran and Washington, which have yet to yield a sustainable agreement. In addition to engaging with the United States, Iran has sought to improve relations with Gulf nations. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian recently met with Qatar’s prime minister, and Araghchi held talks with Saudi officials during the United Nations General Assembly.
Despite the proposal, internal divisions remain within Iran regarding negotiations with the United States. Some hard-line officials oppose diplomatic efforts, advocating for persistent resistance, while other officials favor a diplomatic resolution.
Additionally, the proposal introduces questions about whether it addresses broader regional conflicts, such as the situation involving Yemen’s Houthi forces and the security of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, another vital shipping lane.
