Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has conducted her second Cabinet reshuffle, emphasizing a departure from the influence of traditional factions within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). Announced on September 17, the reshuffle involved retaining most senior ministers while accommodating specific requests from lawmakers, reflecting a new approach to Cabinet appointments.
Among the notable changes, Hiroshi Nakatsuka of the junior coalition partner Nippon Ishin was appointed as the party’s first Cabinet minister, a move signaling Takaichi’s intent to broaden her administration’s political base. Hisayuki Fujii, who takes over as internal affairs minister, and Goshi Hosono, appointed as reconstruction minister with additional disaster management responsibilities, were among those whose preferred positions were keenly considered by the Prime Minister.
Despite the changes, key figures such as Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara, Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama, Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, and Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi have retained their posts, ensuring continuity in critical government roles. However, the reshuffle has not been without controversy. The appointment of Kazuo Yana and Yoshihiro Seki as agriculture and education ministers, respectively, has drawn criticism due to their previous involvement in the LDP’s political funding scandal.
Opposition parties are demanding further explanations for these appointments, underscoring the lingering tensions over political accountability within Takaichi’s government. The newly configured Cabinet faces significant legislative challenges, with priorities including a proposed temporary reduction in the consumption tax on food and a bill addressing the number of Lower House seats.
