by admin477351

Typhoon Champi, a powerful storm, is advancing northwest toward Japan’s southern islands, prompting warnings of torrential rain, strong winds, and hazardous sea conditions. The typhoon, the 30th of the year, is expected to pass near the islands southwest of Okinawa through Saturday. Authorities caution residents to stay vigilant against potential natural disasters, including strong gusts, rising tides, and high waves.

Okinawa Prefecture is projected to experience wind gusts reaching up to 198 kilometers per hour on Friday, decreasing slightly to 180 kilometers per hour by Saturday. Rainfall is anticipated to total 250 millimeters in the 24 hours leading up to 6 a.m. Saturday, with an additional 120 millimeters possible over the subsequent 24 hours. The formation of linear rainbands could lead to even greater rainfall totals, heightening the risk of localized downpours and flooding.

Sea conditions are also expected to worsen, with waves potentially reaching 12 meters around Okinawa on Friday and Saturday. As of 5 a.m. Friday, Typhoon Champi was positioned south of Okinawa, moving northwest at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour, with a central atmospheric pressure of 950 hectopascals.

The typhoon is forecast to weaken as it nears the Tsushima Strait, located between Japan’s Kyushu Island and the Korean Peninsula, before shifting direction toward the east. Authorities advise those in affected regions to remain informed about weather updates and to take necessary precautions against the impending heavy rain, strong winds, and dangerous coastal conditions.
