The United States has introduced new tariffs on drones and their components, with rates reaching up to 100%, as part of efforts to address national security concerns and reduce reliance on foreign supply chains heavily influenced by China. This move specifically targets unmanned aircraft systems, focusing on larger drones exceeding 25 kilograms and those equipped with features relevant to national security, such as thermal cameras and docking stations. These particular drones will incur a 100% tariff, while smaller drones will be subject to a 25% tariff.
Additionally, the U.S. plans to impose tariffs on drones and components from several key trading partners. Imports from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan will face a 15% tariff, whereas those coming from the United Kingdom will be charged a 10% tariff, provided the technology and components originate from these nations or the U.S. The majority of these new tariffs are slated to become effective on September 3.
The White House emphasized that these measures aim to bolster the U.S. defense and industrial base, stimulate domestic drone manufacturing, and create jobs in America while decreasing reliance on international suppliers. Currently, China holds a commanding position in the global drone market, with DJI, a company based in Shenzhen, capturing a substantial portion of the U.S. commercial drone sector. DJI has already faced U.S. restrictions due to national security issues.
U.S. authorities have expressed concerns that drones produced abroad could present risks such as surveillance, sensitive data collection, and potential attacks. In light of these concerns, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission has previously advocated for increased domestic production to mitigate such risks.
This decision occurs amidst ongoing trade and technology disputes between Washington and Beijing. In response, China has also implemented restrictions impacting drone exports to the U.S. and has taken actions against multiple American companies.
