A Japanese trade delegation led by former Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya recently visited China, aiming to sustain dialogue and mend the strained relations between the two countries. The delegation, which includes about 50 members such as Japanese business executives, is seeking to engage with senior Chinese officials during their trip.
Iwaya emphasized the significance of dialogue amidst the current difficulties in Japan-China relations. He expressed his willingness to exchange views with Chinese leaders if the opportunity arises, highlighting the importance of maintaining open communication channels.
The visit takes place against a backdrop of heightened tensions between Japan and China, primarily due to security concerns. These tensions escalated following remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding a potential Japanese response to a Chinese attack on Taiwan.
Coinciding with the Japanese delegation’s visit is the recent US-China summit in Washington, where Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump discussed various issues, including trade and artificial intelligence.
The delegation’s trip had initially been postponed due to the passing of former Foreign Minister Yohei Kono, who previously led the trade promotion organization. The current visit represents a renewed effort to address and improve the bilateral relationship between Japan and China.
