Japan is among the nations participating in a global initiative to bolster cybersecurity through the use of advanced artificial intelligence. Approximately 150 organizations in over 15 countries have been granted access to Anthropic’s AI model, Claude Mythos, which is designed to enhance cybersecurity testing and research. Japanese government agencies and financial institutions are involved, with Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama highlighting this as a crucial step in preparing for future cybersecurity threats.

The initiative requires organizations to satisfy stringent security criteria before they can utilize the AI model. Claude Mythos, part of a category known as “frontier AI,” is capable of identifying vulnerabilities in complex digital systems, making it a valuable asset for security research. However, experts caution that if not properly managed, such capabilities could potentially be exploited to compromise critical infrastructure.

In Europe, the European Union has also gained access to Claude Mythos. The European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) will be actively involved in the program, which European officials regard as a significant advancement in their efforts to fortify cyber resilience. The inclusion of this technology is seen as a progressive move to address evolving cybersecurity challenges across the continent.

Additionally, OpenAI is reportedly in the process of providing one of its frontier AI models to major Japanese financial institutions. This move underscores the increasing global interest in leveraging cutting-edge AI technologies to enhance cybersecurity defenses. As nations continue to grapple with sophisticated cyber threats, the use of advanced AI systems like Claude Mythos is viewed as a strategic asset in the ongoing battle to protect digital infrastructure.
