Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi recently met with Solomon Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale in Tokyo, marking a significant attempt to bolster ties between the two nations amid a shift in the Solomon Islands’ foreign policy. This meeting underscored Japan’s commitment to enhancing cooperation, with both leaders agreeing on a plan to expand development initiatives. As part of this cooperation, Japan will provide 3 billion yen, roughly $18.3 million, in yen loans to the Solomon Islands. The leaders also emphasized the importance of fostering people-to-people exchanges to strengthen bilateral relations.
Prime Minister Takaichi expressed Japan’s desire to forge a “strong and prosperous cooperative relationship” with the Solomon Islands based on mutual values including freedom, democracy, the rule of law, and human rights. Prime Minister Wale appreciated Japan’s support, acknowledging the pressing need for assistance as Pacific island countries grapple with various economic and developmental challenges.
The meeting comes in the wake of a notable policy shift by the Solomon Islands. In 2019, the country changed its diplomatic allegiance from Taiwan to China and subsequently signed a security agreement with Beijing in 2022. This agreement, which permits Chinese naval access to its ports and allows Chinese security personnel to operate within the Solomon Islands, has raised concerns among regional partners regarding China’s expanding influence in the Pacific.
Since assuming office in May 2026, Prime Minister Wale has indicated a change in the Solomon Islands’ foreign policy direction. He has pledged to reassess the security pact with China, criticized China’s recent submarine-launched ballistic missile test in the Pacific, and prioritized diplomatic engagements with traditional allies such as Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and Japan. These actions underscore his commitment to fostering closer ties with the country’s established partners.
Japan’s efforts to strengthen its relationship with the Solomon Islands align with its broader strategic vision of a Free and Open Indo-Pacific, which seeks to promote regional stability, security, and cooperation. As a token of goodwill, Prime Minister Takaichi gifted Wale a football from the Nara Prefectural Football Association, symbolizing the sport’s popularity in the Solomon Islands and Takaichi’s personal connection to Nara Prefecture.
