Oil Prices Rise as Tech Stocks Weigh on Mixed US Market

by admin477351

Wall Street’s major stock indexes experienced mixed results on Monday as the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite posted losses, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average managed to gain. The market remains close to its recent record highs amid investor scrutiny of technology stocks, rising energy prices, and inflation prospects.

The S&P 500 declined by 0.1% to close at 7,807.24, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.4% to 27,245.90. In contrast, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.4% to 51,850.55, buoyed by gains in communication services and energy sectors. Notably, Meta Platforms increased by 3.4%, and Chevron saw a 1.4% rise.

Technology stocks, however, faced setbacks that limited broader market gains. Micron Technology fell 3.9%, Advanced Micro Devices declined 2.3%, Broadcom dropped 1.9%, and Nvidia lost 1.3%. Investors are keenly observing corporate earnings to determine if the current artificial intelligence boom will result in sustained revenue and profit growth.

Additionally, oil prices continued their upward trajectory due to ongoing uncertainty regarding the conflict involving the United States and Iran, along with its implications for global energy supplies. Brent crude rose by 1.8%, settling at $106.65 per barrel, raising concerns about inflation and its impact on household spending and transportation costs.

Market participants are also gearing up for significant U.S. economic reports on consumer inflation, producer prices, and retail sales, which could influence future Federal Reserve interest-rate decisions. Rising borrowing costs have already exerted pressure on the housing market, and major banks are set to report their quarterly earnings this week.

While European markets saw gains, most Asian markets experienced declines. Investors remain focused on the interplay between corporate earnings, inflation trends, and energy prices to assess whether the stock market’s recent gains can be sustained.
