Japan to Drop to Sixth in Global GDP by 2027, IMF Projects

Japan is projected to fall from fourth to sixth place in global economic rankings by 2027, as India and the United Kingdom are anticipated to surpass it in terms of nominal gross domestic product (GDP), according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The IMF’s forecasts estimate Japan’s nominal GDP at $4.34 trillion in 2026 and $4.47 trillion in 2027, marking a significant shift in the global economic landscape.

India is expected to climb from sixth to fourth place globally, with its GDP projected to reach $4.52 trillion in 2027. The UK is also forecasted to overtake Japan, with an estimated GDP of approximately $4.49 trillion that year. These changes underscore the dynamic nature of the global economy and the increasing economic influence of India and the UK.

The growth trajectories for these three economies vary significantly. Japan’s real GDP is anticipated to expand by a modest 0.7% in both 2026 and 2027, hindered by the yen’s weakness against the US dollar and slow economic growth. In contrast, India’s economy is expected to grow robustly by 7% annually on a fiscal-year basis, driven by strong domestic demand and vibrant services activity.

The UK is projected to see more moderate growth, with GDP increasing by 1.3% in 2026 and 1.2% in 2027, according to IMF estimates. These projections reflect a broader trend of shifting economic power among the world’s largest economies.

Japan, once the world’s second-largest economy, was surpassed by China in 2010 and more recently by Germany in 2023, dropping it to fourth place. The latest IMF projections highlight the evolving economic landscape and the growing importance of India as a global economic powerhouse.
