Japanese Firms Strengthen Role in India’s Emerging Semiconductor Sector

by admin477351

Japanese semiconductor-related companies are increasingly establishing their foothold in India as the nation strives to build a robust domestic chip manufacturing ecosystem. At the recent Semicon India 2026 conference held in New Delhi, over 30 Japanese firms engaged in discussions with Indian counterparts about potential investments, technology partnerships, supply chains, and research and development opportunities.

India is determined to emerge as a global hub for semiconductors, focusing on key areas such as chip materials, design, manufacturing, packaging, and testing. The Indian government has ramped up efforts to bolster domestic semiconductor capabilities and develop a skilled workforce to support this growing industry.

Collaborations between Japanese and Indian companies are already taking shape. Fujifilm has partnered with Tata Electronics to advance semiconductor materials, while Sumitomo Chemical is exploring cooperation on semiconductor material supply chains. Additionally, Enomoto is anticipated to provide support with production technology.

In a significant move, Tokyo Electron plans to set up a training center in Gujarat by 2027, aimed at developing engineers specialized in semiconductor manufacturing equipment. This initiative is expected to aid in addressing the shortage of workers with specialized semiconductor skills, despite India’s large pool of engineering talent.

Industry experts believe the involvement of Japanese companies will facilitate technology transfer, enhance workforce development, and strengthen India’s semiconductor supply chain. This increased collaboration is seen as a critical step towards establishing India’s position in the global semiconductor market.
