Canada has officially joined the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) as the first observer nation. This initiative, spearheaded by the United Kingdom, Italy, and Japan, is focused on developing a next-generation fighter jet. The program, which began in 2022, aims to create a sixth-generation stealth fighter aircraft by the year 2035, with BAE Systems, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and Leonardo leading the project from their respective countries.
By obtaining observer status, Canada will have the opportunity to access valuable information related to the program’s development of capabilities, industrial cooperation, and strategic planning for the future. Although this status does not involve any financial investment from Canada at this stage, it opens the door for potential future involvement in the program.
This strategic move is consistent with Canada’s efforts to broaden its defense collaborations beyond its traditional partnership with the United States, by fostering stronger ties with European and Indo-Pacific allies. The inclusion of Canada in GCAP is seen as a significant step towards enhancing technological cooperation and advancing defense capabilities.
Representatives from the involved countries have expressed their support for Canada’s participation, recognizing it as a beneficial opportunity to further technological collaboration.
